But if you can figure out which mod it is, long as it isn't an important one dropping it or both deleting/redownloading it can fix stuff. I know you said even with no mods there, but if you do run modded, very rarely a mod will just go bad for no apparent reason.
There's no real fix for terrible net tho, idk if it's packet drops or what but if one or both players have REALLY bad net then it's hard to get a campaign going reliably. Try letting the other person host in case it's a net thing. Usually the solution in my experience, especially if no mods are involved. Verify game files! Right click game->properties->local files->verify integrity of game files. Very few crashes in general, butttttt we have noticed a few things.
I play pretty much exclusively modded coop with friends, around 600 hours of it at this point.
